HB Functional Fitness offers in-person personal training as well as online coaching with a focus on building strength, stability, and optimizing movement patterns. Beyond workout programming, services provided include: accountability, nutrition and lifestyle guidance, and education to help you reach your goals and maintain lifelong results. The HB Functional Fitness approach is centered on doing things the right way, not just the fastest or easiest way.
Growing up playing sports, I never was serious about actively pursuing strength training and fitness. That changed when I started getting into long distance running and found that I struggled with knee pain. Initially, I thought I just had “bad knees” and would have to deal with the pain or run less. Throughout the struggle with the injury, I learned more about the complexities of how different imbalances in the body can affect one another. It fascinated me that my knee injury wasn’t due to anything wrong with my knees, but with other parts of the body that work together with the knee. I continued learning as much as I could about how the body works. I learned how to train to not only build strength, but to help prevent injury, maximize results, and move more optimally. After six years of teaching middle school science, I decided that I would like to take my passion for science and education into the field of personal training. My goal is to help others see the freedom and confidence felt from improving health, strength, and mobility and the positive carryover into all aspects of daily life.
Life outside the gym can be a bit chaotic (in a good way) as I am a mother of twins. I love the way that my physical strength and the mental fortitude learned from challenging myself to do hard things carries over to motherhood. I contribute my pain free pregnancy and easy recovery to the work and training I did before and throughout pregnancy.
In my free time, I enjoy doing anything outdoors including hiking, backpacking, fishing, mountain biking, running, photography, etc. When I'm not outside (and can find downtime) I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and friends.

HB Functional Fitness works with clients of all fitness levels and backgrounds, including beginners, athletes, and seniors. Training programs are customized to your specific needs based on the client's goals, abilities, and movement patterns seen in assessments. You are never too old to safely start strength training, you just need to have appropriate programming!
The business name is based on the goal of helping clients get strong in a way that not only helps support their goals but also helps them move more optimally & reduce pain. Therefore, helping people see the carryover of strength in the gym into the real world and how it improves their everyday lives. Training styles vary depending on the clients goals and fitness level but may include aspects of bodybuilding (or traditional strength training), powerlifting, functional fitness (kettlebells, sandbags, sled work, rotational movements, etc.), even corrective exercises programmed in as targeted warm ups for any movement imbalances, allowing you to get the most out of your workout & to move & feel your best.
1:1 coaching is just that, coaching. It isn't something cookie cutter that is given to the masses. Every person is different and the path they need to take to reach their goals is unique. HB Functional Fitness's programming is written for each individual client. Movement assessments are done in order to assess any less than ideal movement patterns (almost everyone has SOMETHING we want to work to optimize). Your workout will include a targeted warm up with corrective exercises and mobility exercises that help set you up for success in your workout. These are different for each client. The main workout is also written specific to your goals, skill level, and available workout equipment at home, traveling, or at your gym. Accountability and check ins are done frequently. You have access to Hadley through in-app messaging, phone calls or video calls as needed. Form check ins will be done as needed as well. Programming can be adjusted as needed to help set you up for success or to work around any potential challenges that come along. Nutrition guidance is given as nutrition is often the KEY piece to getting the results you want from your workouts. Habit tracking may be another tool used if it is something the client & coach feel would be valuable. As you can see, 1:1 coaching with HB Functional Fitness is MUCH more than just a workout program written for the masses.
HB Functional Fitness believes the common approach to weight loss isn't really a solution at all (hence why roughly 90% of people regain the weight they lose). Overdoing cardio and cutting calories leads to a slower metabolism, making it harder to keep your results once you've reached your goal. (Unless you want to keep doing those hours and hours on the treadmill, eating like a rabbit, and always passing on the cookie). Hadley believes in looking at where a client is currently at and making a plan specific to them. Many people with a weight loss goal actually have slowed their metabolism down with yo-yo diets and "on and off the wagon" cycles (I get it, the way we have been told to lose weight is exhausting). These clients actually need to speed up their metabolism through a delicate dance of building muscle and reverse dieting (slowly adding calories back in). Other people need education & assistance evaluating their diet and lifestyle habits to help support the goals that they have. HB Functional Fitness can help you wherever you are in this journey!
HB Functional Fitness believes that nutrition is a crucial component of overall health and fitness. For most people, the reality is that we need to also look at nutrition in order to help you reach your goals. Clients receive personalized nutritional guidance based on their goals, dietary preferences, and lifestyle so they can find meals and ways of eating that they enjoy and helps them meet and maintain their goals. Hadley is all about meeting people where they are currently at and making changes at a speed that is sustainable and realistic for the individual client.
While I can give meal plans, I prefer to help clients build a customized list of meal options and snacks that they enjoy and will help them reach their protein and nutritional goals. This helps to educate clients about food and create a lifelong way of eating that clients enjoy so they can keep results and have more flexibility in life.
Muscle is one of the most protective tissues in our body! Muscle helps prevent pain, speed up your metabolism, helps you to be more insulin sensitive, reverses & helps prevents many chronic diseases, increases energy levels, strengthens your bones, helps stop brain deterioration & improves memory & focus, improves your mood, can help treat mild to moderate forms of depression, helps to balance your hormones, helps make tasks in everyday life easier, "tightens" up the body to help people achieve their aesthetic goals, etc. The real question is, why WOULDN'T you want to build muscle? (PS: Ladies you won't wake up one day and accidentally look like a bodybuilder. I promise.)
Muscle requires a lot of energy to keep. Your body does not want to have more muscle than it senses you need. Proper strength training sends a signal to your body that you need muscle. The more muscles mass you have, the more calories your body can burn at rest. This allows you to enjoy more freedom in your diet without seeing unwanted fat gain. This also helps clients with a weight loss goal to be able to lose weight by teaching their body to burn more calories at rest vs. having to manually burn calories. Clients have mentioned being able to take periods of time off training or indulging on vacation without the negative body fat gain that they used to previously see from taking time off of working out. This is a huge part of what makes weight loss sustainable.
Think of the corrective exercises as a targeted warm up, written specific to you to help optimize your movement patterns before going into the "bulk" of the workout. This helps to correct any movement patterns that are less than ideal. It also helps to connect to any underactive muscles so when we call on them in the "bigger" exercises, we can get our muscles to fire properly & connect to the proper muscles. This is a huge component of what makes HB Functional Fitness programming more effective and much more valuable than generalized training apps or programs. Working to optimize your movement patterns will give you better results, help prevent injuries, and keep you in the game for the long term.
1:1 coaching is customized to YOUR needs. Part of the coaching process is discussing your schedule and figuring out a workout format that will work best for you (or adjusting things once you get going as needed). For many, 2-3 days of strength training is just right. For others, short 20 minute workouts done 5-6 days a week may be much more feasible.
Your programming is written specifically FOR YOU. This means that the program will be written around whatever equipment you (or your gym) have. Access to some dumbbells or kettlebells is ideal. However, bands, bodyweight, or suspension trainer workouts can be written too. Remember, I'm here for YOU.
You should finish your workout feeling like you have more energy than when you started. It should feel like you worked hard yet you could have still done a little more. Afterwards, you shouldn't feel very sore. A little soreness is expected as you just get started or when you switch phases of training. However, too much soreness is a sign of overtraining & likely leads to less progress counter to what many people think. These are things that will be discussed with your coach and programming will be tweaked as needed.
Yes, workouts are repeated once a week typically for 3-4 weeks. Exercises are a skill. Repeating workouts allows clients to practice the movement and focus on trying to get better at the skill of that exercise week after week. Weight and reps are tracked through the app and we are looking to increase in volume over time (more weight, reps, sets, range of motion, etc.). This progressive overload will be part of what your coach is tracking to help you progress and to help avoid plateaus.
